| IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A SAFE TAN? Research suggests the benefits of regular sun exposure far outweigh the risks of overexposure. Regular, moderate sun exposure might actually decrease your risk of getting breast cancer, colon cancer, osteoporosis or even alzheimer's disease. IS TANNING INDOORS SMARTER THAN OUTDOOR TANNING? Definitely! Our customers are exposed to a scientifically controlled dosage of ultraviolet light carefully formulated to tan you with a minimal risk of sunburn. That kind of control is virtually impossible outdoors, where variables such as seasonality, time of day, location, weather conditions, altitude, and the earth's thinning ozone layer make sunburn much more likely. WHY HAVE DERMATOLOGISTS TAKEN SUCH A STRONG POSITION AGAINST TANNING? Skin cancer is an important issue to the dermatology industry because it represents the only subject that its lobbyists can promote as critical or life threatening. Unfortunately, in their zeal to scare consumers into their offices, lobbyists for the dermatology industry have twisted the facts, exaggerated research findings and misled the public about tanning. DOES TANNING CAUSE SKIN CANCER? No, tanning doesn't cause skin cancer. Heredity, diet and repeated sunburn are probably the biggest risk factors for the non-lethal forms of skin cancer. No research has ever shown a causative link between moderate sun exposure and skin cancer. WHY SHOULD I USE EYE PROTECTION WHEN I TAN? You risk serious injury to your eyes if you fail to wear protective eyewear. Ultraviolet light can penetrate deep into your eyes when you tan. Specifically, the short waves of UVB can penetrate the cornea, possibly causing painful corneal eye burns. Some UVB, and the longer UVA waves, can penetrate the lens or retina causing retinal burns or even cataracts and other long-term internal eye damage. WHY SHOULD I USE INDOOR TANNING LOTIONS WHEN I TAN? Indoor tanning lotions work differently than outdoor lotions. Indoor lotions are scientifically bio-engineered to maximize your tanning performance while moisturizing your skin. Today's tanning lotions deliver nutrients to your skin that the cells need to induce the tanning process. It's literally like feeding your tan. Also, these special ingredients, only found in indoor lotions, can help you attain a darker tan in fewer visits, saving you time and money while taking care of your skin. ARENT ALL TANNING SALONS ALIKE? Definitely not! Anyone can plug in a piece of tanning equipment and call themselves a tanning salon. But indoor tanning is a sophisticated process that shouldn't be taken lightly. As members of the Smart Tan Network, our employees are trained and certified every year. Other salons may claim that they're trained, but they will never have the understanding of lamps, equipment and how they affect your skin that we have gained as a Smart Tan Member. HOW LONG DOES A TAN LAST? In general, tans last between 2 to 4 weeks after sun tanning. | |
